About The Play
An Interesting Recipe
Jen has dreamed of her wedding her whole life; she's found the one and returns to her North Carolina hometown to ask her deceased mother’s best friend, Della, to bake her wedding cake. But Della refuses because Jen is marrying a woman. Mix in a baking reality TV show and dormant marriage, and then things get very, very interesting.
Facts About The Play
From a writer of the hit TV show This Is Us
Inspired by the events that led to the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission Supreme Court case
Bekah Brunstetter says of the character Della:
"Della is very much a conglomeration of a lot of women that I’ve known and observed in my life. I tried to imagine what it was like in her home and why she believed what she believed. It’s easy for people like her to feel how they feel about same-sex marriages. I believe once that situation is in your world, you can’t push it aside. I didn’t want her to just change all of a sudden. I was trying to focus on the small change."
