Love, for Short is the culmination of a decades-long project by theatre artist and Russian scholar R. Andrew White, and ISTC Company member James Serpento, to publish new translations and adaptations of some of Anton Chekhov's finest short works. Included in this acting edition are nine short plays, including not only Chekhov's famous and much-loved classic one-acts The Bear and The Proposal in dynamic newly-revised translations, but also seven never-before-published one-acts by White and Serpento, adapted from Chekhovian short stories: Thieves, The Fiancee, The Doctor, Zina, The Ninny, Lazy Susan, and A Happy End. Esteemed actress and Russian scholar Kate Burton (Grey's Anatomy and Anthony Hopkins' August) has noted that, in Love, for Short, "the humour and pain and irony and fortitude of [Chekhov's] characters are indelibly rendered" and that "the life-giving majesty, so endemic to the work of Anton Chekhov, has been royally delivered.”
