FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

IOWA STAGE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE

Company presents Mitch Albom’s story of love and loss as part of their virtual season.

Iowa Stage Theatre Company, central Iowa’s home for award-winning theater that inspires, enlightens and entertains, is presenting a live streamed version of Mitch Albom and Jeffrey Hatcher’s Tuesdays with Morrie, an adaptation of Albom’s best-selling book.

Tuesdays with Morrie tells the story of successful sports writer Mitch who, through a story on Nightline, reconnects with his college mentor, sociology professor Morrie Schwartz. Morrie is dying of ALS (Lou Gherig’s disease), and although they have lost touch for 16 years Mitch begins to visit with Morrie every Tuesday, learning lessons of life, love and loss.

“There are thousands and thousands of people in care facilities in Iowa alone” Matthew McIver, Artistic Director of ISTC, said. “In the pandemic these folks are facing illness and loss without being able to have their family and friends with them. We wanted to tell a story about someone dealing with that kind of loss, who faces it with courage and love, and teaches a lesson we all can learn from.”

Albom’s memoir about his teacher sold over 15 million copies and has been translated into dozens of languages. It has been adapted for television and the stage, and ISTC will be sending performances over the internet. The production is being sponsored by AARP Iowa, with a co-sponsorship by American Enterprise.

“We hear all the time from our members about how important it is to stay connected to their loved ones,” said AARP Iowa State Director Brad Anderson. “Thanks to Iowa Stage Theatre for giving a voice to the importance of combating the social isolation of vulnerable Iowans in nursing homes and other long term care facilities, especially in these times.”
