TROUBLE IN MIND
By Alice Childress
March 31 - April 9, 2023
Prompting laughs and provoking thought in equal measure, Trouble In Mind looks at the challenges of
black artists working with a white theater to tell what may not be an authentic story. Wiletta Mayer is a black actor cast in another well-meaning “race play” of the time. She doesn’t mean trouble, but
sometimes there’s only so much a person can take.
A BRIGHT NEW BOISE
By Samuel D. Hunter
May 12 - 21, 2023
Will moves from his rural Idaho hometown and gets a job at the Boise Hobby Lobby looking for a fresh start – and a chance to meet Alex, the brooding teenager he gave up for adoption. However, Will’s secrets follow him, and soon everyone, from foul-mouthed manager Pauline to shy dreamer Anna and especially Alex’s adopted brother Leroy, is pulled into them. This moving yet funny play was a breakthrough for playwright Samuel Hunter, a graduate of University of Iowa, and won the Obie for best play. Another of Hunter’s plays, The Whale, is being released as a film starring Brendan Fraser.
TWELFTH NIGHT
By William Shakespeare
Shakespeare in the park in conjunction with
Salisbury House and Gardens
July 18-23, 2023
One of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies, Twelfth Night tells the story of shipwrecked Viola, who disguises herself as her lost twin brother, and navigates between the courts of the lovesick Duke Orsino and the grieving Countess Olivia. This lighthearted story of love, pranks, and identities mistaken and disguised will be a summer delight for all.
Athena
By Gracie Gardner
September 15-24, 2023
A deadly serious comedy about ambition, success, and owning your superiority.
Mary Wallace and Athena are brave, and seventeen, and fencers, and training for the Junior Olympics. They practice together, they compete against each other, they spend their lives together. They wish they were friends.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL
By Charles Dickens adapted by Michael Wilson
December 8 - 17, 2023
This classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future has
become a tradition for Iowa Stage Theatre Company and Des Moines! The vision of designer Jay Jagim, who was involved in the initial creation of this adaptation at the Alley Theater in Houston
three decades ago, shines in the return of this heartwarming production. Bring the whole family to enjoy the timeless tale of Scrooge’s ghostly visitations and Yuletide change of heart.
