2023 Season

Our 2023 Season Serves Up A Collection of Stories full of Adventure

We are thrilled to be able to announce the lineup for ISTC’s sixth season. To kick the season off, we will begin with Alice Childress' historical play Trouble in Mind. We follow that with Samuel D. Hunter's A Bright New Boise and Shakespeare's classic Twelfth Night for Shakespeare on the Lawn at Salisbury House.

In December, we finish the year off with A Christmas Carol by Michael Wilson.

We invite you to join us for these incredible shows.

March 31 - April 9, 2023

Prompting laughs and provoking thought in equal measure, Trouble In Mind looks at the challenges of
black artists working with a white theater to tell what may not be an authentic story. Wiletta Mayer is a black actor cast in another well-meaning “race play” of the time. She doesn’t mean trouble, but
sometimes there’s only so much a person can take.

The Cake

By Samuel D. Hunter

May 12 - 21, 2023

Will moves from his rural Idaho hometown and gets a job at the Boise Hobby Lobby looking for a fresh start – and a chance to meet Alex, the brooding teenager he gave up for adoption. However, Will’s secrets follow him, and soon everyone, from foul-mouthed manager Pauline to shy dreamer Anna and especially Alex’s adopted brother Leroy, is pulled into them. This moving yet funny play was a breakthrough for playwright Samuel Hunter, a graduate of University of Iowa, and won the Obie for best play. Another of Hunter’s plays, The Whale, is being released as a film starring Brendan Fraser.

It's A Wonderful Life: The Radio Pla

By William Shakespeare

Shakespeare in the park in conjunction with

Salisbury House and Gardens

July 18-23, 2023

One of Shakespeare’s most delightful comedies, Twelfth Night tells the story of shipwrecked Viola, who disguises herself as her lost twin brother, and navigates between the courts of the lovesick Duke Orsino and the grieving Countess Olivia. This lighthearted story of love, pranks, and identities mistaken and disguised will be a summer delight for all.

Long Day's Journey Into Night

By Gracie Gardner

September 15-24, 2023

A deadly serious comedy about ambition, success, and owning your superiority.

Mary Wallace and Athena are brave, and seventeen, and fencers, and training for the Junior Olympics. They practice together, they compete against each other, they spend their lives together. They wish they were friends.

December 8 - 17, 2023

This classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and the spirits of Christmas past, present, and future has
become a tradition for Iowa Stage Theatre Company and Des Moines! The vision of designer Jay Jagim, who was involved in the initial creation of this adaptation at the Alley Theater in Houston
three decades ago, shines in the return of this heartwarming production. Bring the whole family to enjoy the timeless tale of Scrooge’s ghostly visitations and Yuletide change of heart.

an Artist
or a Show

We count on the support of our generous donors to help us create the laughs, the goosebumps, the tears, and the rush of a well-told story.

Sponsoring an artist helps offset production costs, allowing us work with a variety of Cloris Award-winning local artists. An artist is a performer, a director, a lighting designer, or any one of the  professionals creating the magic of the stage.

Sponsoring a show helps us cover the necessary cost of resources like venue rental, licensing, and more. Before we can build the set, help us secure the space.

To sponsor a show or an artist, contact us at

flex package

Flex packages are for 4 ticket vouchers to be used for any Iowa Stage Theatre Company performance at the Stoner Theater in the 2023 season. Use all 4 vouchers at one performance, use one voucher for each performance, or any other combination! Vouchers are not show tickets and must be redeemed at the Civic Center Ticket Office for tickets to specific performance dates and times.
